Note ... The scores are simply my pre-season "guess" of relative team abilities in a combined race ... I included 30 teams to show some depth.

In General ... Similar to other pre-seasons, I see lots of uncertainty in the team scores posted above ... Pre-season projections are often made with limited knowledge (or no knowledge) of incoming impact runners such as transfers (from other sports or other schools) or significantly improved runners from the previous year ... It requires guessing.

Burnt Hills enters the 2017 XC season as the overall favorite ... Burnt Hills is the only team in NY with three returning runners having overall speed ratings in 170s (see Class B speed ratings below) ... Last year, Burnt Hills finished 2nd at Federations and 7th at the NXN Regional ... their top 4 runners from both those races return ... and Burnt Hills appears to be improving based on track results.

Fairport and Niskayuna are newcomers with respect to being contenders at the NXN Regional ... Burnt Hills and Niskayuna both compete in the Suburban Council League (Burnt Hills beat Niskayuna at the Suburban Council Championships last year), so they will be facing each other during the season.

St. Anthony's appears capable of having 4 runners at or above the 170 speed rating level, and that makes them an NXN contender.

Fayetteville-Manlius graduated 3 of the top 5 runners from their NXN team, but don't be surprised in FM reloads and becomes a contender at the NXN Regional.

Like last year, there are no odds-on overall favorite for the NY Boys Teams entering the 2017 season ... One or two new impact runners could make a big difference for a bunch of teams ... Should be interesting to watch the development throughout the XC season.

The Class A pre-season rankings are topped by two new comers this season -  Fairport and Niskayuna ... neither team qualified for States last year.

Fairport did not compete as a team at either Federations or the NY NXN Regional ... Fairport finished a close 2nd to Penfield at sectionals (54-59) and Fairport returns their top 4 runners from sectionals (plus two others) ... Speed ratings of returning runners give Fairport a small advantage over the other Class A teams.

Niskayuna looks poised to have a very good season ... Niskayuna finished 2nd to Saratoga at sectionals last year ... Like Fairport, Niskayuna returns their top 4 runners from sectionals (plus two others) ... Track results suggest Niskayuna is improving, so I give them a decent chance at winning States if they can beat other good Section 2 teams at sectionals (4 of the top 7 above are Section 2) ... Niskayuna competed at both Federations (18th) and the NY NXN Regional (13th), but neither result was impressive.

Fairport has no recent team experience in the post-season and Niskayuna did not finish that high in the post season ... And those are concerns with respect to NXN.

Fayetteville-Manlius has an ability to reload quick and compete at a high level at the NXN Regional ... Corning and Shenedehowa are close behind and may have the ability to win the Class A title ... The Section 2 sectional should be an interesting race!

Burnt Hills is the defending Class B champion ... they won States by an impressive 38 points last year (over Pittsford Mendon) ... Burnt Hills returns their top 4 runners from States (3 sophomores and a freshman last year) ... Burnt Hills enters the 2017 season as the odds-on favorite in Class B and the the top overall rated team in NY State.

Pearl River appears 2nd-best ... Not much separates Cornwall, Queensbury (dropping back to Class B), Pittsford Mendon, Goshen and North Shore ... I gave East Aurora some credit for ability to reload.

Watkins Glen won last year's State Class C race with an impressive 21 points ... their top two runners graduated, but their #3 scorer at States (Gabe Planty) is the top returning runner from the State Meet ... Watkins Glen also has impressive depth for a Class C team, so Watkins Glen enters the 2017 season as the Class C favorite.

Mount Academy, 2nd at States last year (lost to Watkins Glen by 21-51), graduated all 7 runners from States ... But Mount Academy is another Class C team with impressive depth as can be seen by the speed ratings of their returning runners below.

Pleasantville, Marcus Whitman and Putnam Valley have major uncertainties in terms of depth or returning runners, so I used a dart board to make a "best" guess.

Vernon-Verona Sherrill drops from Class B to Class C, and sectionals will be run on their home course.

Sauquoit Valley, 3rd at States last year, returns their top 4 runners from States including top runner (and Class D co-favorite runner) Dylan Canarelli.

Elmira Notre Dame, 4th at States last year, returns their entire team ... Addison was 3rd at States last year in Class C, and drops to Class D (they return their top 3 runners) ... Beaver River lost to Sauquoit Valley by 50-74 at sectionals last year, but Beaver River returns their entire team from sectionals.

This is close ... Team depth may be an important factor ... The impact of new runners (or newly motivated runners) could be really important and make a big difference.

As normal, there is a lot of uncertainty in the pre-season for many small school teams ... Which teams will develop the most over the course of the season is a guess.
