NYSPHSAA State Meet 2017 - Projections & Preview 2017 |
Please remember:
the projected scores below only indicate a possible outcome based
upon individual runner speed ratings ... they
are only one indication of team strength. I used the top seven
runners from each team as best as I was aware of ... one major problem
with projections is knowing who will or will not be running on some
teams (it can make a big difference) ...
Projected Scores were posted on
November 8, 2017
... Actual scores will be posted side-by-side after
the meet ...
ACTUAL SCORES ADDED November 11, 2017 NOTE ... I consider these Projections to be similar to "Seed Times" for a track & field meet. |
NOTE - Concerning the Exclusion of Section 10 from the Preview Below: Sectional results were available from all sections except Section 10 (very abbreviated results were available from the http://www.northcountrysports.net/ but inadequate for the purposes of the preview below ... in addition, no results were available from the Section 10 Interdivisional meet the week before) ... It is not appropriate to include Section 10 ... It's like going to bet a horse race and the last two past performances are missing from the program (not acceptable). A major focus and web-site starting initiative of TullyRunners was information & prediction of the NYSPHSAA Championship Meet ... This included a variety of informational data including track results for individuals ... Since TullyRunners will no longer be covering Section 10 in cross country, that removes the need of covering any of their track results as well ... It's not a big deal because NY MileSplit will maintain the individuals in their track and XC database ... Next year, assuming TullyRunners is still operating, cross country coverage for NY State will be modified and abbreviated compared to this year (details to come later). |
ACTUAL SCORES ADDED November 11, 2017
Boys Class A - Corning a slight favorite |
Projected Actual School Sect Score School Score =============== ==== ===== ================== ===== 1 Corning (04) 67 Corning 38 2 Fayetteville-Manlius (03) 72 Fayetteville-Manlius 40 3 Niskayuna (02) 77 Niskayuna 88 4 Smithtown (11) 78 Smithtown 103 5 Fairport (05) 100 Fairport 106 6 Manhasset (08) 149 Monroe-Woodbury 157 7 Monroe-Woodbury (09) 177 Clarence 187 8 Clarence (06) 196 Arlington 190 9 Arlington (01) 208 Manhasset 220 |
Pre-Race Analysis ... This is an excellent team race ... A major factor in the outcome could be the course conditions ... The boys race before the girls at this year's meet (race times for their four races 9:00 am to 10:30 am) ... The Boys Class A race is the 3rd race of the day (10am) ... with Friday temperatures below freezing (plus snow flurries) and low temperatures 13-20 degrees early Saturday morning, the Wayne course is likely to have frozen sections for the early races ... the ground is still relatively warm, so muddy, slippery and uneven sections may exist ... muddy conditions MIGHT expand as the day goes on with runners chewing-up the course with partly sunny skies ... what a great day for Cross Country ... I really dislike course conditions like this!! Corning is the defending Class A champion and a slight favorite for this race ... Corning won last year's race on the Section 4 home course at the Chenango Valley Golf course and repeated this year's sectional win on the same course ... Sectional meet speed ratings give Corning a bigger edge in the score than shown above ... some injured runners (e.g. Quinn Nicholson) are returning to form for Corning and they definitely seem to be improving ... The handicapper in me wonders "How well will Corning run at the Wayne course under these condition?" ... After winning last year's State Meet handily, Corning did not run as well at Bowdoin Park (the NXN Regional course). Fayetteville-Manlius, Niskayuna and Smithtown are virtually even-up and very close to Corning (with some consideration to a neutral course location) ... Which team will have a good day? ... The outcome is a guess. Individual Race ... This is a very good individual race ... As can be seen from the overall seasonal speed ratings below, a bunch of guys are in contention for the win. |

Girls Class A - Fayetteville-Manlius the odds-on favorite again |

Pre-Race Analysis ... Fayetteville-Manlius is the top ranked team in the nation (again) and the odds-on favorite to win this race (again) ... Fayetteville-Manlius did not race well at the Wayne course during the Pre-State Meet, so it will be interesting to see how they race here ... As noted below, 4 of the top 7 Class A runners in the State are from FM. The boys race before the girls at this year's meet (race times for the boys four races 9:00 am to 10:30 am) ... the Girls Class A race is scheduled for 12 noon (the 7th of 8 races) ... Based on weather forecasts, the early boys races may take place on frozen ground ... By the time the Girls Class A race goes off, the course MIGHT be muddy, slippery and chewed-up a bit ... and that could affect the performances of both teams and individuals ... The effect To-Be-Determined. Shenendehowa is a solid choice for the 2nd-team position ... North Rockland is coming off some injuries and could challenge Monroe-Woodbury for 3rd. Individual Race ... Repeating from previous years - This is a great race in terms of quality ... Katelyn Tuohy (North Rockland) and Kelsey Chmiel (Saratoga) are currently the #1 and #4 ranked runners in the nation ... Claire Walters (FM) is the #25 ranked runner in the nation. |

Pre-Race Analysis ... John Jay Cross River and East Aurora seem very close in this Class B race ... and Mount Sinai is within striking distance. A number of different scenarios could occur in this race based on some seasonal inconsistencies and the running conditions at the Wayne course ... I'm not sure what will happen. Individual Race ... Katherine Lee (SWR) is the defending Class B champion and the odds-on favorite to win ... A group of girls are in contention for a top 5 finish ... Caroline Timm (Lourdes), an exceptionally talented track runner, has shown improvement in recent XC races ... Sarah Connelly leads the contending Mount Sinai team ... Overall, Greenwich gets a slight advantage entering this race ... But this year, South Lewis is a serious contender to win ... 3 of the top 10 Class D runners in the State are from South Lewis (and 5 of the top 10 are individual runners, not running for team places). Individual Race ... Brooke Rauber (Tully) is the odds-on favorite entering the Class D race (she won last year) ... Brynne Wright (Greenwich) has been racing well again ...
