Below are Performance Profiles for 15 top national high school male runners entering the 2017 cross country season ... I find it interesting to examine profiles of the top national boys and also compare them to the top NY boys (Profiles for the 2017 New York Boys) ... Performance data helps evaluation ... and knowing the performance level of the best national runners is always interesting ..... Opinions will differ on the ranking position of individual runners, but that's a good thing ... It's also a "necessary thing" for serious handicappers ... The order of the runners below is my current pre-season opinion .

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2017 XC season. The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster). Selected track data are also shown.

#1 - Brodey Hasty 12 Brentwood HS Tennessee

Brodey Hasty enters the 2017 XC season as the top-rated runner in the nation ... he finished an excellent 3rd at NXN Nationals, and is the #1 returning runner from NXN ... had four XC races at a speed rating level of 195 or higher ...... Brodey did not compete for his high school during the track season, and I "guess" he may run unattached this XC season ... Brodey ran very well during track with two 2-Mile races in 8:45 (Brooks PR and New Balance Indoor Nationals) and a 1-Mile in 4:01.75.

#2 - Alex Maier 11 Flower Mound HS Texas

Alex Maier was simply phenomenal during last year's sophomore XC season ... Finished 5th at both NXN and Foot Locker Nationals (he is the #1 returning runner from Foot Locker and #2 from NXN) ..... Like XC, Alex had major improvement in track with three 3200m races in the 8:50s (8:52.30 PR), a fast 1600m PR (4:10.88) and a 5000m track race in 14:25.60.
