Below are Performance Profiles for 17 top national high school female runners entering the 2017 cross country season ... I find it interesting to examine profiles of the top national girls and also compare them to the top NY girls (Profiles for the 2017 New York Girls) ... Performance data helps evaluation ... and knowing the performance level of the best national runners is always interesting ..... Opinions will differ on the ranking position of individual runners, but that's a good thing ... It's also a "necessary thing" for serious handicappers ... The order of the runners below is my current pre-season opinion.

How To Read the Table Information: The number following the name is the school grade for the 2017 XC season. The XC data listed below the name are, in order, the race name, race date, place, actual race time, and speed rating (higher is faster). Selected track data are also shown .

#1 - Claudia Lane 11 Malibu HS California

Claudia Lane is the defending Foot Locker Champion ... she has the top speed ratings of any returning runner ... and that makes Claudia the #1 ranked runner in the nation ..... Claudia ran exceptionally well in track and has the fastest 3200m time of any runner (9:57.52) ... she beat the NXN champion at the Arcadia 3200m (Brie Oakley) before losing to her at the Brooks PR (but Claudia ran 2-miles in 10:01.18).

#2 - Kelsey Chmiel 11 Saratoga Springs HS New York

Kelsey Chmiel was the NY State Runner-of-the-Year in XC last year ... Kelsey finished 5th at NXN Nationals making her the #2 returning NXN runner behind 2nd-place NXN finisher Ember Stratton of Sunset Oregon ... Kelsey has the second-best speed rating mark of any returning runner (157) ... she had eight races with speed ratings of 150 or higher.

After a spectacular track season as a freshmen, Kelsey continued the outstanding track performances as a sophomore ... set State sophomore records at Indoor 3000m (9:26.26 winning States) and 2-Miles (10:12.94, 3rd at Nationals) ... set Outdoor State Sophomore records at 3000m (9:18.09) and 3200m (9:59.62) ... Won Outdoor New Balance Nationals 2-Mile Championship race (10:10.44 under hot conditions) ..... And just for fun (the day after State Qualifiers in June), Kelsey finished 9th at the Freihofer's 5K Run for Women running 16:42.1 and beating some well known professional runners (Ashley Higginson, Amy Van Alstine, Jen Rhines ... race won by Sara Hall in 15:48.9).

#3 - Rebecca Story 12 Christian Academy of Knoxville Tennessee

Rebecca Story finished 3rd at Foot Locker Nationals with an impressive performance ... a week before the Foot Locker South Qualifier, Rebecca ran a 3200m track race in 9:59.85 (only Claudia Lane and Kelsey Chmiel have faster times at that distance) ..... Set track PRs at 1 Mile (4:45.63) and 800m (2:12.51) ... Rebecca is the #2 returning runner from Foot Locker, has the 3rd best 3200m mark and is showing continued improvement in track ... and that makes her the #3 ranked runner entering the 2017 season.

#5 - Grace Ping 9 Winona Cotter HS Minnesota

Grace Ping received national cross country attention as a 7th-grader in winning the Roy Griak Invite and then finishing 14th at NXN Nationals ... As an 8th-grader last year, Grace moved to Utah and was unable to run in State varsity competition because Utah does not allow junior high athletes to compete at the varsity level ... she has now moved back in Minnesota.

Nike allowed Grace to compete in NXN last year, and Grace finished 6th (she is the #3 returning runner from NXN) ... Grace set an age-group 5000m World Record last year and again this year (16:25.63)

#6 - Annie Hill 12 Glacier HS Montana

Annie Hill had some inconsistent races last XC season, but I think her real talent was shown at the NXN Northwest Regional which she won impressively with a speed rating of 154 ..... Annie ran some excellent track performances this spring including a 4th-place finish at the Arcadia 3200m (10:15.21), a fast Mile at Brooks PR (4:46.18) and an 800m PR (2:09.27).

Jacqueline Gaughan finished 11th at Foot Locker Nationals and was consistently good during the championship portion of the XC season ..... Ran a major PR at the Loucks Games 3200m (10:05.71) - only four returning runners covered that distance faster than Jacqueline (Claudia Lane, Kelsey Chmiel, Rebecca Story and London Culbreath) ... Jacqueline won the New Balance Grand Prix Mile during the winter (4:52.60) ... she could definitely better this ranking.
